Gemini Season: Gossip, Connection, and Curiosity

we took our own advice for taurus season and rested for the past few weeks.

but before gemini season ends, we want to explore why we gossip even when we know we shouldn't.

essay written by madison martinez

Gemini season is often associated with conversation, curiosity, and communication. Naturally, this makes it a perfect time to discuss one of the habits we all have as humans: gossip.

The term gossip tends to have a negative connotation. We associate it with rumors or talking behind someone's back. Even though gossip is universally understood as something bad, why do nearly all of us continue to participate in it?

Gossip, in many ways, is deeply human. Gossip has functioned as a form of social survival throughout history. Sociologist Susan Cotts Watkins has shown that villagers in Malawi rely on gossip to judge the fitness of potential sexual partners. Also, the philosopher Lorraine Code argued that gossip can be a tool to persuade people to shift their moral positions. (Elias, 2021). Not only can gossip benefit people in these practical ways, but it can also foster a sense of deep connection between individuals by sharing valuable information. This is why some people believe they may be helping others rather than hurting them. There have been many times people end gossip with “I just thought you should know.” The motivation often comes from a desire to protect or warn.

CONNECTION BEHIND THE CONVERSATION

Some of my favorite memories with friends involve us sitting for hours talking about life, relationships, and the people around us. Not in a malicious way, but where we are sharing stories with one another. When I look back, I don't think these stories were really about the people we discussed, but about us creating deeper connections with each other.

Psychologist Robin Dunbar suggested that gossip is one of the most important mechanisms for bonding social groups. Sharing gossip with someone can be a sign of deep trust because you are sharing sensitive information. (McAndrew, 2023).

Gemini energy thrives in this space, it is curious, communicative, and constantly seeking understanding in conversations.

WHY GOSSIP FEELS SO ADDICTIVE

If you have ever learnt a new piece of information and wanted to share it with a friend instantly, you're not alone. Engaging in gossip can trigger a spike in oxytocin, which is a hormone that is bound with good feelings. (McAndrew, 2023). This can make people want to continue to share more and more. Gossip doesn't simply spread because people are cruel, It spreads because humans are naturally curious and social creatures who enjoy exchanging information. This doesn't excuse harmful behavior, but it helps explain why resisting the urge to share information can sometimes feel difficult.

Gemini season highlights this tendency. Curiosity can lead us toward discovery but it can also tempt us to speak before considering the consequences of our words.

GOSSIP IS NO LONGER LOCAL

Gossip itself isn't new but the way it spreads has changed significantly.

A conversation that used to stay between a few friends can now reach thousands or millions of people through social media. Screenshots get shared, comment sections fill up with opinions, and before long thousands of people are discussing someone they have never even met.

I’ve caught myself reading comment sections before and I realized how easy it is to forget there's an actual person on the other side of the screen.

The challenge isn't that people are talking. Humans have always talked. The challenge is that gossip is no longer local and what starts as a conversation between a few people can quickly become something much bigger.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Gemini season is all about connection, communication, and curiosity. These qualities make life interesting and should be celebrated. I don't think people should stop talking about others entirely, since we are naturally curious about each other. We learn through stories and connect through conversations. What gemini season can remind us of, though, is to be more intentional with our words. Before sharing, we can ask ourselves what the true motivation is behind it.

Communication is one of the most powerful tools we have as it can build and strengthen communities and create belonging. However, it can also cause harm when we are careless with it.

A lesson from gemini season is that it's good to stay curious and connected, just remember every story involves a real person, not just an interesting conversation.
