Libra Season and the Pressure to Be Pretty

essay written by madison martinez
During Libra season, it’s easy to get reminded of beauty, from the clothes we wear to the way we present ourselves to the world. Ruled by Venus, Libra is associated with aesthetics, harmony, and a desire to create a life that feels beautiful. I don’t think there's anything wrong with wanting to look good.
I love putting together an outfit, putting on makeup, and taking photos and feeling great. Beauty can be expressive and meaningful, but somewhere along the way, enjoying beauty becomes tangled up with needing to be beautiful. When looking good starts to feel like a requirement for being worthy or respected, it might be time to take beauty off the pedestal.
Why Beauty Has So Much Power
We hear a lot about how beauty is on the inside, and while that is true, it would be unrealistic to pretend appearance doesn't matter in the world we live in. People make assumptions based on how others look all the time, sometimes without even realizing it.
Being considered attractive can influence everything from social interactions to professional opportunities. Psychologists refer to this as the halo effect. This is when we assume someone has positive qualities simply because we find them attractive. People who are seen as attractive may be treated more favorably in the workplace, in school, and even in the criminal justice system. (Perera, 2026). Pretty privilege exists and pretending it doesn't would ignore the way people are actually treated.
It makes sense that we care about our appearance when we know it can affect how people perceive us. However, there is a difference between understanding that beauty has social value and believing that being beautiful makes someone more valuable as a person. Just because someone gets more attention for the way they look doesn't mean they have more to offer.
I think the tricky part is that we can know this logically and still find ourselves caring about whether we look good enough. It's one thing to say that looks aren't everything, but it's another to actually believe that when so much of the world seems to reward them.
When Looking Good Starts to Affect Your Confidence
It's easy to put more pressure on our appearance than we realize, especially when we're constantly surrounded by images of what we're told is attractive. Sometimes, it feels like there's always something we could change or improve about ourselves. Without even noticing, we can start focusing more on our flaws than the things we actually like about ourselves.
I think we've all had moments where we feel good about ourselves until we see a photo we don't like. Suddenly, we're picking apart our appearance over something as small as the lighting or an angle. It's a reminder of how easily our confidence can change when we put too much importance on how we look. You can want to look your best without letting your appearance determine how you feel about yourself.
How Social Media Changes the Way We See Ourselves
Social media makes it easy to compare ourselves to others. We see perfect outfits, clear skin, and people who always seem to look their best. Even when we know photos are edited or carefully chosen, they can still affect how we feel about ourselves.
Sometimes, I will scroll through TikTok just to pass the time and end up noticing things about myself that I wasn't even thinking about before. Filters and edited photos can make us forget that real skin has texture and nobody looks perfect all the time. We don't have to stop enjoying beauty content, but it's worth noticing when it starts making us feel worse about ourselves.
Beauty Standards Are Always Changing
Beauty standards never stay the same. What's trending one year might be completely different the next, from makeup and hairstyles to body ideals. If we keep trying to fit every new standard, there will always be something else we feel we need to change.
There's nothing wrong with trying a new trend or changing your style, but there's a difference between doing something because you like it and feeling like you have to. You can admire someone else's appearance without comparing it to your own. Your appearance doesn't have to be a never-ending project.
You Can Have a Good Life Without Looking Perfect
It's easy to think that being attractive will make everything better, especially when we see people praised for their looks everywhere. But beauty doesn't determine whether you'll have meaningful relationships, a fulfilling career, or a life you genuinely enjoy. You don't have to be the prettiest person in the room to be loved, appreciated, or successful.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in how we look that we forget to enjoy what's happening around us. We worry about getting the perfect picture instead of enjoying the moment. Not every photo has to be perfect, and not every day has to be one where we feel our best. Life is still happening, and we're allowed to enjoy it regardless of how we look.
Finding a Healthier Relationship With Beauty
Taking beauty off its pedestal doesn't mean we have to stop caring about our appearance. It means enjoying fashion, makeup, and skincare without feeling like we need to look perfect all the time. We can appreciate beauty in others without using it as a reason to criticize ourselves.
Maybe that's part of what we can take away from Libra season: learning to appreciate beauty without letting it define us. We can enjoy looking good, try new things, and express ourselves through our appearance while remembering that our worth has never depended on meeting a certain standard. Beauty should add to our lives, not make us feel like we're never enough.
